Corvette Passion

The Corvette hit my radar at 17 years old, during my second year of having a driver's license. After 4 years of high school Army ROTC and three years of Air Force ROTC in college, my goal of an Air Force R&D career was cut short when I was told I did not pass the physical because of a bad heart. It was then that I decided to get my first Corvette, a used 1960, for $2,200. I had the 1960 Corvette until it was stolen.

In 1964 I purchased a used 1963 Sting Ray roadster, but in September 1964 I ordered a 1965 Sting Ray Coupe, with Factory Air and Fuel Injection. At the end of September, Chevrolet went on strike, and by January, the dealer told me they would not build the car as ordered. I had to choose between Air and Fuel Injection. I chose Air and it was the first time that dealer had ever ordered a Corvette with Air. I took delivery in March of 1965 and still have the car. I now understand that Chevrolet built only 13 1965 Corvettes configured as I ordered; Silver w/black interior, 350HP, 4-Speed close ratio, Positraction, AM FM, Tinted glass, Factory Air, Aluminum KO wheels (which included a KO spare), Real Teak-wood steering wheel, Telescoping steering column, and Transistor Ignition. In 1966 I added springs and shocks from the racing package and side exhaust. I have since removed the side exhaust, but now wish I had not. I've never driven it in Winter, it's been a great car!
