A 71 Year Passion

In the summer of 1953, as an 11 year old, I watched a shinny new white 1953 Corvette come off a car hauler at the local Chevy dealer in Rochester, NY. I was that kid standing next to my 27 year old brother! I looked up at him exclaiming I’m gonna buy one of those when I grow up! He responded with "Sure Butch!". Fast forward to 1958, and a ride in a buddy's brother's red 1958 Corvette instantly took me back to that unforgettable day in 1953! Fast forward again to 1960, now a junior in high school and living in the suburbs of Motor City, Detroit Michigan. A doctor friend of my older sister comes to visit from Rochester, and you guessed it, in a silver 1959 Corvette with the 283/270hp 4speed! At the dinning room table Dr.Kelly slides the keys, registration and $50 across the table and says to me, “be back Sunday evening by 6:00”. I don’t think I slept that entire weekend putting countless miles on that Vette with my best buddy riding shot gun! Back by 6:00 followed by the same experience the next summer! In 1963 I got my very own red1960 Corvette, 283/230hp 3 Speed and I’ve been driving one ever since I was 16 to be exact! My latest is a white 2000 C5 Roadster, which I've proudly owned since 2002! Guess it must be my favorite! Nothing like a 6 speed manual Corvette! Every guy should own at least “1”! - Jerry Gallagher Berkley, MI. In the heart of Woodward Ave. M-1
