My ‘87 C4 Z51

I can recall being 17 years old and seeing the hype in car magazines here in Australia. My family had always been fans of the blue oval, but the images of the Corvette really caught my attention. I was intrigued by the leaf spring suspension, the clam shell hood and its claimed performance. I was skeptical, but still intrigued. Fast forward a number of years, I’m now firmly a General Motors fan and own a collection of mainly Holden cars. I then recall, when working as a Mechanic for a race team, that we were grafting an old Nascar motor into an ‘85 C4 convertible. I’d left before it was a going concern, but I really loved the look. Moving on to 2021 and with no research, I find a freshly imported ‘87 4+3 Coupe at the right price. I convinced my wife I needed that car, she agreed, but I needed to sell one of my other cars to make room.

Long story short, we travelled to South Australia, took her for a spin and immediately fell in love. Best thing about it, is she was still left hand drive, manual and low mileage. Story goes is that she’s ex California, one owner and been in storage for over ten years. We bought her and had it shipped over to Melbourne. Needless to say, it wasn’t stored very well, had rodent infestation, but it has all been a fairly easy fix. Replaced brake hoses, rebuilt calipers, new clutch cylinders and body seals. The exhaust had been used as a tiedown in shipping, so I had to fabricate new sections etc., We’ve done plenty of Club runs and even Tarmac Rally tours with Claudia ( my wife has named her ) and have never had a problem. For a standard car, she outperforms modern sportscars and race cars. I now love a ZR-1 in the shed as well. Now that would be awesome
